Half a million dollars a year. That's what it can cost to have round-the-clock, high-end care in your own home — and there's a growing queue of Australians happy to write the cheque.

The top end of the aged-care market is booming, and after speaking with some of the operators servicing it, I can see why. This isn't your standard nursing home experience. We're talking chef-prepared meals with matching wine, hydrotherapy pools, in-house cinemas, concierge services and carers hand-picked to match your interests — whether that's horse racing, politics or gardening.

Melbourne-based Acquaint sits firmly at the premium end of home care. Managing director Fiona Somerville explained to me that the government-funded packages come with means testing, waiting lists and paperwork. For families who either don't qualify or simply don't want the hassle, private providers step in — and the demand is booming.

At the residential end, Shane Moran of Provectus Care compares luxury aged care to the difference between a 3-star and 5-star hotel. His facilities across Sydney and Melbourne cater to residents willing to pay refundable accommodation deposits north of $1 million in capital cities, plus ongoing fees.

There are essentially two pathways: independent living (often a 99-year lease with an upfront fee ranging from hundreds of thousands to several million, plus a departure fee of up to 30 per cent of resale value), or a full aged-care facility for those needing on-demand support.

My take? This is a growing segment of the market that deserves proper financial planning consideration. Retirees are increasingly adopting a "use it or lose it" mindset — and if you've accumulated wealth over a lifetime, spending it on comfort, dignity and quality of care in your later years is a perfectly reasonable use of capital. The key is structuring your finances early so the option is genuinely available when you need it.
