It is never too early to think about retirement

When you approach retirement, you begin to think about what you will do with all your free time. Go on holidays, tick boxes on your bucket list, learn to play an instrument because you never found the time before, or maybe keep working as you need to maintain social contact.

However, one thing to keep in mind is that retirement is like being on a weekend all year long. What happens most of your weekends? You spend money that you earned during the week.

Planning ahead will help you cover any unexpected expenses and assist you in achieving all your goals. If you have more money than you can spend in retirement, that’s always a good thing for your children.

We also work with clients to get the timing right - why work until you're 80 if you could have retired at 55 with sufficient capital for the rest of your life?

Aged care is also important, so making sure there is a buffer to cover costs as we get older is important.

As is estate planning, making sure there is a clear plan in place, which starts with a Will (but goes much deeper than that) to ensure your loved ones inherit your assets in the manner you want, with as little tax taken as possible.

Retirement is not necessarily quitting work and leaving the workforce. We like to define retirement as "the ability to do what you want, when you want financially." The economics are simple when it comes to investing in property, borrow from the bank at a long term average interest rate of 5% p.a. and hope that the property goes up by 10% per year of more (capital growth plus net rental return).

And when it comes to a property strategy, there are many ways to go about it. Do you buy a home to live in or do you follow a 'rentvest' strategy. Both have their pro's and con's.

Some people may value the lifestyle aspect of owning a home as well as benefit from the capital gains tax free status when the home is sold. While others prefer to be more flexible where they live by renting and use their available cash flow to build up a portfolio of investment properties.

Then next is what structure do you use to purchase a property? Personally? In a family trust? Family investment company? Using a self managed super fund?

One that is sorted, identifying the metrics of the property is important, do you go for high passive income, strong capital growth, negatively geared property and so on.

Stress testing to ensure if circumstances change (loss of rent due to poor tenants, or if you lose your job for instance) that you will be able to retain the property and not be forced to sell.

And finally, where are the right places to buy to not overpay and get strong capital growth, while keeping an eye on the outlook for interest rates.

How much should we spend today versus how much should we put away for the future.

And when it comes to retirement, superannuation is a key component of this and the choices we make today regarding super can have life changing impacts down the track in terms of how good our retirement is.

We assist you make the correct choices when it comes to superannuation and retirement planning.

Should you use a low cost industry super fund or a more powerful retail super account. Or is establishing a self-managed super fund the way to go?

Contribution strategies are important to get right also but it can be confusing to know what type of super contribution to use and how much to add. Concessional contributions, non-concessional contributions, catch up concessional contributions, spouse contributions, downsizer contributions to name a few of the different categories of super contribution categories.

And then there is the actual investment strategy to consider. Do you have an ethical preference to investing? Are you approaching retirement and would benefit from a 'high income' based super investment strategy? Are you a low cost investor and have a preference for the most efficient, lowest cost ETF portfolio. Should you purchase a physical investment property with a loan inside your superannuation fund?

Doing your Best - Maximising your Super

We manage our clients equity based portfolios under what is known as a Managed Discretionary Account (MDA) portfolio advisory structure. We believe this is the best and most direct way to manage wealth. 

It is cost effective as we as your financial advisors are also acting as your portfolio manager in investing your cash in the most appropriate investments.

After we agree on the best investment strategy to pursue, our clients sign an agreement providing us with the ability to make investment decisions without hassling them each we wish to make a portfolio change.

This allows us to be nimble when it comes to portfolio management and keep our clients portfolio up to date with market conditions by making regular changes as needed.

Our governance process includes a weekly internal investment committee meeting where we discuss current portfolio settings, broader economic conditions, new investment opportunities and current cash levels. The investment committee assess each of these key areas and after discussion, the chair of the investment committee resolves each action to be taken.

Our process is in stark contrast to many other financial advisory firms who use a Separately Managed Account (SMA) structure. Although it may sounds similar to a MDA, a SMA brings in an external fund manager to oversee to the investing of your money. 

This can lead to a situation where the financial advisors role has become redundant. The financial advisor may appear to be investing your money and charge you a fee, however it is the external fund manager (of which you also pay a fee) who is actually making the investment decision, making the whole set up clunky and heavy on fees.

That is why we prefer the lean and cost effective MDA investment management pathway opposed to a SMA.

And when it comes to other assets such as investment property, we act as your sounding board and give you guidance as you progress with your plans, whether it is to purchase, renovate or sell a property asset.
